1940's Costume Help

thedivinegoatI've just found out that on Thursday, parents are expected to attend a 1940's street party at the school and come in 1940's costume.
I'm sending the boys in as evacuees - long shorts, White short sleeve shirts, label around the neck, box on a string for the gasmask.
However I have nothing suitable, so need to go and get something tomorrow, or Wednesday in Cardiff or Merthyr. Does anyone have any good ideas of what I could buy out of todays fashions, that would look suitable?* (From somewhere like Matalan or TK Maxx would be good, because I have no budget)
And if anyone has some good resources on hair or make-up I would also be incredibly grateful for that.
*No trousers as I only wear skirts or dresses.
