I wish my corner of DW fandom was as active and as full of joy as it was in 2005.

Because the outpouring of posts inspired by that last episode (Fugitive of the Judoon) would have been thing of beauty.

As it is, it made me so, so happy.

I think I might actually make some fandom icons for the first time in years

Spoilers! )

And now I must go and get ready to go and see Shappi Khorsandi at the Hay Festival, so all further thoughts will have to wait til later.

Typed from notes made whilst I watched the show, but not edited or made any more coherent.

PS I am very squeeful about this episode and I would prefer no squee-harshing in the comments.

I have a spoiler cut now. Spoiler cuts are cool )

So in love with this show.

Tumblr people, how spoilery is tumblr right now for Doctor Who?

In other news I didn't watch Doctor Who last night due to being ill in bed incapable of watching anything, an it's going to be at least tonight before I'm able to watch it. Fortunately everyone in my dwircle has been pretty good at cutting for spoilers, although I do get the impression everyone enjoyed it.

I'm just really wary of going onto tumblr as I don't think people on there are as good about spoilers - the only thing in it's favour is that I don't follow any specific Doctor Who, just people who are into Doctor Who and I know from LJ/DW so are more likely to be spoiler-etiquette aware. (Only you can't really cut for spoilers on tumblr, and visual ones are more of a risk than written ones and tumblr is so much a visual fandom experience for me.) I follow specific NCIS tumblrs and they are so bad about spoilers, although I'm not so bothered by spoilers for NCIS as I am for Doctor Who.

Well, I have reblogs queued up until Thursday, so my tumblr will stay active even if I avoid the site, and I post my original stuff though Posterous, so that's not a problem.

(I'm also contemplating creating a separate blog for either my original stuff or the stuff I reblog, so that I can put flattr on the Tumblr blog with the original stuff, I don't feel comfortable putting it on a blog with lots of reblogs, but I don't know whether to put the original stuff on the new tumblr or keep it on the old, and reblog on the new. Thoughts from people who use tumblr?)

Also if there's anyone in my dwircle who is on tumblr who I don't already follow, let me know. (My Tumblr is, strangely enough, thedivinegoat.tumblr.com and my original posts should all be tagged iPhone)

I'm a third generation Doctor Who fan, (my son is now fourth generation) the first Doctor I can remember watching is the fourth Doctor. During my teens, I loved the Seventh Doctor and idolised Ace. Had posters of both on my walls.

Then the Ninth Doctor came along and I adored him, mourned him and came to love the Tenth Doctor as well, whilst becoming more critical of the show.

Because despite the occasionally clunky dialogue, plot holes you could drive a TARDIS through, gender and race fail, I still enjoyed the hell out of it.

Only, last Easter, for what a reason I've forgotten now, we didn't watch The Planet of the Dead when it aired. And then we kept on not finding the time to watch it, or weren't in the mood. And the same with the Water of Mars and End of Time.

But now Eleven's starting tomorrow, so last week we started to catch up. I loved Planet of the Dead and want to know where all the Christine de Souza fic is. (Especially the Amanda/Parker/Christine capers). But Water of Mars, I hated it. I didn't finish watching it because it was actually an effort to watch it, and instead sat behind the sofa, (I know, but it's one of the few comfortable places to sit in our sitting room where you're not in sight of the telly), reading fic whilst Doug finished watching it.

And then came the End of Time. And yet again I got about fifteen, twenty minutes in and couldn't watch any more. I wasn't watching the Doctor, I was watching someone run around in his clothes. So Doug finished watching it on his own. And told me about it. And then made me watch the regeneration scene.

...

WTF?

...

Just really, WTF?

You know how in fics fans have really run with the whole Doctor getting slapped meme? That's what that whole end bit needed. Only the with writers getting slapped as well. (And WTF was the Mickey & Martha bit? Not that I'm necessarily opposed to the ship, but when Martha was last known to have been happily engaged to Tom, where did it come from? I'm pretending I misheard the no place for a married woman line.) Because that whole stare-at-people-moodily whilst refusing to talk to them came across as ridiculous rather than the intense, I'm-dying-and-I-don't-want-to that I think they were going for. Bah.

I've been disappointed in Doctor Who, I've hated choices they've made, been angered by the stories they've chosen to tell. But never on this level before. It just didn't feel like Doctor Who. Which when you consider how varied in tone it's been over the years is quite a feat.

I'm giving Eleven a chance. I have to, but I feel now that the show is now going to have to work to keep me, rather than before where it would to have to work to drive me away.
thedivinegoat: Noora from the Comics the 99 using her powers (the 99 - Noora)
So my parents, in their infinite wisdom, named me Joanna and my sister Josephine, (for the record my parents are/were named Jenny and John - they swear blind the alliteration of our names wasn't deliberate) and we have mostly gone through life being known as Jo and Josie. Every now and then there would be confusion when one of my sisters friends would take it upon themselves to shorten her name further and phone up and ask for Jo.

Only now a newspaper has confused the two names and I read the article knowing it's about my sister, but I had this small creeping feeling it's about me. I know it's purely because I know the Jo they are referring to is my sister - I don't normally have this problem reading about Jo's (in case it sounds as if I'm seriously egotistical ;-)) - but it was a very weird feeling.

If anyone's interested in seeing how my kids are growing, I've stuck a batch of photos up at flickr - here.

My friend isn't actually mentioned in this article, but her mother and father in law are, as is her husband.

RTD goes to Hollywood - Awesome webcomic on how RTD's move to Hollywood could go.

This post is in support of PHSE being taught in schools. Warning: Triggery for rape and gang rape.

Does anyone else read the 99? I'm up to issue ten atm moment, (waiting for next month to buy some more), and I'm really enjoying it.

And finally I am being secretly judge-y about anyone/blog/article that asks 'where were you during the moon landing?' without the slightest nod to the fact that a significant part of their audience hadn't actually been born then.
