thedivinegoatI went to see Made in Dagenham tonight, and OMG this film was made for me.
It's a dramatisation of the 1968 Ford sewing machinists strike at the Ford Dagenham assembly plant, where female workers walked out in protest against sexual discrimination and the desire for equal pay. (Thank you wikipedia)
It's filled with baby feminists realising their own strength, and women supporting each other, and it aces the Bechdel Test.
There are so many bits that got me, like Albert telling Rita about watching his Mum work herself to bone for less than half money that the men got when she asked him why he was supporting the women.
Or like this bit
"Oh no, keep going, please keep going.
Do you know who I am? Who I actually am. I'm Lisa Burnett and I'm 31 and I have a First Class Honours Degree from one of the finest Universities in the world and my husband treats me like I'm a fool.
And when I was studying for my degree I was very very happy, and mostly because of the work, because I loved reading about all these extraordinary people making history and , and I just wondered what it felt like. So let me know will you, when you finish doing it."
Or this bit.
"I am what is known as a fiery redhead. Now, I hate to make this a matter of appearance and go all womanly on you, but there you have it. And me standing up like this is in fact just that redheaded fieriness leaping to the fore. Credence? I will give credence to their cause. My god! Their cause already has credence. It is equal pay. Equal pay is common justice, and if you two weren't such a pair of egotistical, chauvinistic, bigoted dunderheads, you would realise that. Oh, my office is run by incompetents and I am sick of being patronised, spoken down to, and generally treated as if I was the May Queen. Set up the meeting!"
(Um, that clip cuts off at the end, but it is brilliant).
In conclusion I want Yuletide fic about Rita and the other women, and I think I might just have to try and vid it.
